The appearance of the exterior of the church has been decidedly changed and the fine old brick church that dates back to 1845, and was one of the first in the county, has been modernized inside and out by the expenditure of about $10,000. An addition 25 by 40 feet in size, of brick, has been erected at the front for use as a Sunday School room, and by the use of sliding doors the two large rooms are made into one auditorium, much larger than the original edifice. A pastor’s study has been added, the pulpit has been changed and several other improvements made. Heretofore, the two preaching points, Vestal and Vestal Center, have been comprised under the one name of the Vestal charge. Tracy Creek originally was comprised in the field but it was abandoned several years ago, and other work then dropped that, possibly, may be revived again if the Rev. Mr. Winter finds opportunity to do so, in addition to his regular work at Vestal Center. The out- appointment has paid about 25 per cent of the total salary of $1800 raised on the charge, and the trustees meet today to learn if thy can increase the size of the salary. There is no parsonage at Vestal Center, but a good church, and a small society, exists there. A Baptist Church also exists in the community. Membership of 201 According to the minutes of the Wyoming Conference, the Vestal charge has 201 members, about 21 are on the preparatory roll. The Rev. Mr. Cadwell is one of the younger men of the Wyoming Conference. His ministerial record in the Conference began with a charge at Auburn, Pa, in 1916; he was at Courtdale and Plainsville in 1917; at Courtdale in 1918; Springville 1920-21; and he came to Vestal in 1922. His work in the western suburb has been most successful. Vestal charge is one of the old historic points of the Wyoming Conference, and is a remnant of a circuit of size which first appeared among the appointments in 1831 and included the wide field of Vestal, Apalachin, Little Meadows, South Owego, Quaker Lake, Choconut, Forest Lake, Vestal Center, Catlin school house, Hard Scrabble, Tracy Creek, South Chenangto, Eel Hill. Later the circuit included Vestal, Catlins, Apalachin, Little Meadows, South Owego, Hemlocks, New Connecticut, Quaker Lake, Choconut, Forest Lake, Eel Hill, and Spaulding school house. Catlin school house was named after Nathaniel Catlin, father of the late General Isaac Catlin and faither-in-law of General Benjamin F. Tracy, who was a class leader. |
