It is so energizing to see the signs of Spring
burst forth around us. It is even more energizing to see the great
signs of life within our church: the deep commitment of our
supporters, the way in which our congregations gives of their time
and talents to minister in Christ’s name.
Among all of the wonderful stories of discipleship, I want to share
with you the blessing of our youth and their leaders, and our recent
mission to Boston. It was a real gift to have traveled for four days
with 20 youth, both middle school and senior high, and their 6 adult
leaders. The youth were on their best behavior; they got along
extremely well with each other, showed great respect for the church
and its members that housed us, and worked very hard during the time
we spent at two shelters for the homeless of Boston. We are very
proud of all of our youth!
Our original mission was to the homeless, and to have the youth
learn as much as they can about this mission in the inner city. Yet
it turned out that God had much more in mind for us. Christ Church
(United Methodist) in Wellesley opened their doors to us by not only
giving us a place to stay, but by preparing breakfast for us each
day. As we spoke with Pastor Amy and some of their members, we
learned of the struggles that both their church and community have
been facing.
Wellesley Church currently has only about 16 youth and children,
aged 2 through high school. We discovered that just our very
presence in their building was a ministry to this church. They were
overjoyed to see our youth laughing and having a fun time together,
both in our work and in our play.
Later, we discovered that our presence in that church and community
meant more than we could have imagined. Pastor Amy shared with our
group the tragic story of an unexplained rash of teen suicides over
the past year – six within Wellesley, and seven within the
neighboring community of Needham. She shared with me that it was a
tremendous boost to everyone who saw our group to see youth who are
so positive and full of hope and life. It was like witnessing the
resurrection.
Time and time again, God will lead us to the right places at the
right times. By following where God leads, we may not always know
the incredible things God is accomplishing through us, but rest
assured it is happening – every time we yield to God and are open to
sharing Christ’s love.
May God continue to lead you and make you a
blessing to others.
Pastor Mike
